The concept
The basic concept of the show is that 24 girls will stand in a line, each behind a lighted podium. A man will then come on stage, secretly choose which girl he would like to date, and announce some basic information about himself (name, age and where he is from). At this point the girls can declare they are not interested simply by turning off their light.
Oh no,round 1…and only 8 lights left
The man will then continue to reveal information about himself through pre-recorded videos. The subjects of the videos are life and work, what he looks for in a woman and his dating history, and lastly his friends opinions of him. The girls can turn off their lights at any point, though if all 24 lights go off then he loses and leaves alone.
Finally, providing there are two or more girls left, the man will have to pick two girls to come onto the stage as well as the girl he originally picked – even if she has turned off her light. The man will then ask each of them the same question, after which he will make his final choice. If the girl accepts (actually only the girl he originally chose can reject him) then they may walk towards each other, join hands, and head off into the sunset for a future date and possible romance. True love.
Success!
Entertainment
This show is entertaining for many reasons:
Sometimes one seemingly innocent comment from a man can be met with a flurry of lights being turned off. Funny.
The background music is so cheesy and cringe, but actually perfect for the show.
I like the bald host, Meng Fei (??)
Once you have watched it a couple of times it’s easy to follow.
The girls stay on the show until they are picked so you get to know them. Sometimes men apply to go on the show in order to meet a specific girl.
You can learn useful words and phrases, especially ‘slang’ words.
Reaction in China
The show has attracted the attention of the entire public and the government after one now infamous episode in 2010. A female contestant named Ma Nuo (??) rejected a man’s romantic offer to take a ride on his bicycle with him, stating that she would rather cry in the back of a BMW than be laughing on the backseat of a bicycle.
Ma Nuo (??)
In response to the public outcry over Ma’s infamous quote the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) issued a set of new rules stating “Incorrect social and love values such as money worship should not be presented in the shows.” For example, now salaries and material possessions cannot be discussed.
Popularity in China
Shortly after it was launched in 2010 it was attracting around 50 million viewers each episode. Although now many people say the show is not as entertaining since the new rules were introduced it is still incredibly popular throughout China to this day, particularly with the younger generation.
Conclusion
Remember – not everyone
The attitudes in the show are said to be representative of contemporary Chinese views on love, marriage, and lifestyle. During my time in China I have heard countless times that if a man wants to get married he absolutely has to own a house, have a decent job and if possible a good car. It seems If You Are the One supports this. Unfortunately in modern China for some girls (not all) true love is all about the numbers. And men aren’t always better. For example, on a similar dating show (Take Me Out ?????) a man rejected a female paediatrician stating that he preferred women who ‘can’t do anything’. Lovely.
